Lung function decline in laboratory animal workers.

چکیده

In their recent paper Portengen and colleagues have made an important contribution to our understanding of laboratory animal allergy. However, they have omitted to draw attention to an observation of clinical importance to occupational physicians. They have suggested that the lack of decline in lung function in ‘‘experienced’’ workers may be due to the healthy worker effect. Their suggestion is not supported by their own data: the decline in lung function over two years among newly exposed workers with symptoms of LAA was not significant and surprisingly there was a significant increase in function among the symptomatic experienced workers. This being the case there seems little reason to conclude that the loss of symptomatic workers (due to a healthy worker effect) would adequately explain the absence of a decline in function. An equally valid conclusion is that the effect observed in newly exposed workers is small and may not be sustained in the long term. Physicians are wise not to preclude sensitised workers and those with symptoms of LAA from work with animals solely on the basis of concern that this may have a deleterious effect on health. Portengen et al have provided new evidence that supports this. I agree that the results and conclusions should be interpreted with caution and that further work is needed. However, this is a reassuring study, with important implications for current animal workers and their health providers.

Lung function decline in laboratory animal workers: the role of sensitisation and exposure.

BACKGROUND Little is known about the relation between allergic sensitisation and subsequent long term lung function changes in working populations exposed to sensitising agents. AIMS To investigate whether exposure and work related sensitisation to laboratory animals are associated with lung function decline. METHODS The relation between exposure and sensitisation to laboratory animal aller...

Decline in lung function related to exposure and selection processes among workers in the grain processing and animal feed industry.

OBJECTIVES To follow up workers in the grain processing and animal feed industry five years after an initial survey, and to monitor exposures to organic dust and endotoxin and changes in prevalence of respiratory symptoms and lung function. METHODS Outcome measures in the present survey were decline in lung function over five years, rapid annual decline in forced expiratory volume in one seco...

Relationship between Lung Function and Flour Dust in Flour Factory Workers

Introduction: Exposure to flour dust is an important risk factor in occurrence of allergic airway disorders among mill workers. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and its relation with exposure to respirable dust. Materials and Methods: In this study, all of 35 workers who worked in the flour producing section of three factories were chosen as ca...

Influence of hay and animal feed exposure on respiratory status: a longitudinal study.

Our aim was to study respiratory symptoms and lung function decline in farmers, with particular attention to the influence of handling hay, straw and animal feed. From a cohort recruited in 1993-1994, 219 (82.6%) dairy farmers, 130 (62.5%) nondairy agricultural workers and 99 (66.4%) controls were re-evaluated in 2006. They answered medical and occupational questionnaires, underwent spirometric...

Respiratory effects of chronic animal feed dust exposure.

AIM The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of chronic work related respiratory symptoms and to determine lung function abnormalities in animal feed industry workers. METHOD 108 workers with a mean age of +/- SD: 32 +/- 7.11 yr employed in the animal feed industry and 108 unexposed subjects as a control group were enrolled in the study. All subjects filled out a questionnaire on the...
